Q: I am a junior in high school and all my life I have enjoyed building things, solving problems and drawing plans for various devices. After doing a little bit of construction with an engineer on a mission trip with church, I am pretty sure I want to go into engineering. My only problem is that when I understand math I love it, but there are times when I don’t understand it and then I can’t stand it. I am in Trig Analysis / Pre-calculus this year and I like solving the problems, but I still have mixed feelings. Do you or any students that you work with have the same problem and do you think it would be a big hindrance to me if I want to succeed in Civil Engineering?

Q: We live near Cleveland, Ohio and our 11th grade son is interested in automotive design. There are good options nearby for BA programs in industrial/automotive design but I think he will have more flexibility and be more employable with a Bachelor of Science in engineering. He gets very good grades in science and mathematics, and loves building things. He is good at drawing (cars) and computer graphics.
I am told that most engineering involves some design, and I have seen CAD and graphics courses in some engineering major coursework, but isn't there some "crossover" Bachelor of Science degree that encompasses both engineering and design?
We strongly prefer a smaller university.
